After graduating summa cum laude from Boston University in 1986,
in 1987 Janet Chvatal received an International Rotary Scholarship
for graduate study in Opera in Vienna, Austria. The scholarship
was sponsored by the Beaverton Rotary Club based in Oregon, along
with Rotary International, and for one year Ms. Chvatal underwent
intensive Opera training in German at the "Hochschule fur Musik"
in Vienna, one of Europe's top advanced music schools.
Since
Ms. Chvatal's training in Austria, she has gone on to appear in
concert and in Opera in Germany, France, England and Sweden, as
one of Europe's brightest up-and-coming young talents. She played
the starring role of 'Christine' in Andrew Lloyd-Webber's The Phantom
of the Opera for two years in Vienna, and recently starred in a
series of live broadcasts called "Opera Light" for German Television,
a series which will air to millions of Europeans over the next several
seasons. Since her scholarship year in 1987, Ms. Chvatal has made
numerous guest appearances at Rotary International Conventions and
Conferences all across the Northwest region (including Canada) as
a spokesperson for the success of Rotary International's educational
programs.
