Songs of the Americas

Within you
There in your heart and in your life
My voice becomes a lake
Igniting the water with the golden vibrations
Of the leaves passing the air.
The trees burn of gold and water
As your eyes close beneath the singing…

from the poem “Cadencia” by Nimia Vicens

Songs of the Americas
coloratura soprano and classical guitar

Contained within the borders of North, Central and South America
is a deep tradition of storytelling through song. These songs tell of love and life
through intimate, poignant and sometimes humorous tales,
and have the power to bring us close to that which we hold most dear:

the warmth of a mother singing to her child,
...sleep my little one...
a better path to follow;
T’is a gift to be simple, t’is a gift to be free…
or simply the beauty and wild exoticism of nature:
I’m the girl in the woods, a girl of strange moods – spirits possess me…

These songs let us touch our past and connect us to our future.

The Chvatal/Kritzer Duo takes us on a journey headed south,
exploring the vivid colors of the musical traditions that ring throughout
these Continents. The result is a haunting blend of classically arranged folk music
from Puerto-Rico to Brazil, from the civil war era Appalachian Mountains to
21st century California. The evening highlights rarely heard and
world-premiere performances of works
by living composers of the Americas.
