Songs
of the Americas
This
is the Duo's debut CD, and it can be purchased at: www.miramont.com
The
following is a review from IN TUNE Magazine, Japan, 1998:
Every
once in a while a recording comes along that grabs you and makes
you drop everything and simply listen. This CD is one of them.
There's a warmth and intimacy about this duo that pulls you into
their music-making where voice and guitar become one.
Chvatal
and Kritzer's debut recording features arrangements of folk songs
as well as works by Dusan Bogdanovic, Frantz Casseus, Ernesto
Cordero, Villa-Lobos, and Morten Lauridson. Most of the pieces
have never been recorded, let alone arranged for voice and guitar.
Chvatal's
voice is immediately attractive and filled with sensuous tone
and luster. It shimmers with iridescent beauty while blending
with the mellow sounds of the guitar. Unlike a good deal of other
sopranos, there's nothing piercing or strident about her tone.
her power and volume never overwhelm the guitar.
Guitarist
Scott Kritzer, and accomplished soloist, expertly folows her subtle
leads and tempo changes and then shines on his own in lyrical
solos by Bogdanovic and Villa Lobos. This is the cutting edge
of repertoire for voice and guitar: fresh arrangements, all brilliantly
programmed and exquisitely performed. Watch for more great things
to come from this talented pair."
